Gear and Pulley Kit

Gear trains appear in most mechanisms that need to change the speed or torque of a rotating component. This kit covers spur gears, planetary trains, worm gears, pulley-cable systems, and differential gears, all on a common working-panel format.

Each configuration can be assembled, measured with a caliper, and analysed. Students compare the theoretical gear ratio against the measured one, and work through the standard tooth-geometry calculations.

Learning outcomes

  • Calculate, measure with a caliper, and compare gear tooth specifications (addendum, dedendum, circular pitch, etc.).
  • Design and assemble a simple gear set for a given gear ratio.
  • Design and assemble a pulley and cable system for a given velocity ratio.
  • Measure the gear ratio of a simple gear set.
  • Measure the different gear ratios of a planetary gear set.
  • Measure the gear ratio of a worm and worm-gear system.
