Composite materials

A composite material combines two base materials into something that behaves differently from either of them alone. The usual reason to build one is to get a part that is stronger, lighter, or more resistant to a specific environment than the materials you started with.

We offer composite design and manufacturing as a service. A typical project goes through:

  • Fabric and fibre selection. We pick the weave and fibre type for the loads the part will see. This stage often needs analytical calculation or FEA.
  • Manufacturing process. Hand lay-up, vacuum-bagged hand lay-up, or resin infusion. The choice depends on resin viscosity, cure time, and the shape of the part.
  • Mould design. Male or female moulds, in metal, composite, or plastic, depending on run size and surface finish.
  • Mould preparation. Waxing, gel-coat application, and fabric pre-cutting.
  • Quality control. Checking cure, density, dimensional accuracy, and where it matters, strength and stiffness.
