Notch Hydraulic Bench

Measuring flow in an open channel is essential for managing water supply. Hydraulic structures such as weirs are placed in the channel to read discharge indirectly from the flow depth.

A notch is an opening in the side of a measuring tank or reservoir that extends above the free surface. A weir is a notch at larger scale, used for measuring discharge in free-surface flows like rivers. The upper edge of a weir sits at the water surface, leaving the lower edge (the crest) as the active feature. Weirs come in several shapes (rectangular, triangular, trapezoidal), and the triangular weir is particularly suited to small flows.
